The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story commences when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that come with any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
